How can you find ways to ensure your participants feel safe during their learning session? Do they know where the restrooms are, or the exits? Do they have easy access to their cell phones in case there is an emergency? Does their leader know where they are and support their development?
Can you allow for at least two options during your session? Allowing for choice helps your participants gain a sense of control- one of the biggest ways to combat trauma in the learning space.
This part of the model is all about sharing the power in the room. How can you develop a legitimate partnership with your learners? Where can you shift the locus of control to encompass a sense of power for
your learner?
Interconnection is about continuous peer support. How are you designing your learning experiences to incorporate long-term learning partnerships with your learning base?
Are you reliable? As the learning or development professional, your learners or clients are looking to you for the consistency they might not be finding in their lives outside of session. Are you considering the importance of this consistency, and planning it into your designs?
In order to quell the trauma response in your learners, one of the most important avenues you have is to empower them. This asks learning and development specialists to remove their ego from outcomes, and allow for as much authority and agency to the learners as possible.
